LOCATION
The village of Ormiston lies 12 miles south-east of Edinburgh. The city centre and the Main-line railway stations of Waverley and Dunbar can be reached in about half an hour and the Edinburgh by-pass brings the airport also to within half an hour's drive. Being situated close to the Al and A68, the principle routes to the South, the house is well located for travel to the Borders and England.
House of Ormiston is set on the northern side of Main Street in the village of Ormiston, in an impressive, wide, tree-lined street with broad grass verges, flanked by mostly old houses. At the back are lovely open views over the garden and beyond to the rich farmland of East Lothian. Immediately to the North of the property is Glebe land and a gate in the garden wall provides access to the fields.
HISTORICAL NOTE
House of Ormiston (formerly Ormiston Manse) is reputed to be one of the oldest inhabited houses in East Lothian. It is recorded that in 1568 The Rev. Andrew Blackball, probably the first Presbyterian minister, came to live at the Manse although prior to this date the building may have been a watch tower. The Manse had a series of distinguished ministers, among them The Rev. John Sinclair MA who in 1646 tutored boarders in Latin. Two of his boarders became prominent in Scottish affairs; one, John Cockburn, becoming Lord Treasurer Depute and another, William Carstares, as Principal of Edinburgh University, was advisor to William of Orange.
In 1779, when this PlannedVillage was laid out, the upper storey of the house was taken down and two storeys were added with a projecting wing behind. Subsequent alterations were carried out in 1850 when the dining room and drawing room above were added.
